Ways to identify version?

Other than hoping that the owner of a site has left the changelog file in the docs folder, how can you reliably identify the version of a PHPBB site?

I'm trying to figure out the version number of one and it states at the bottom its 2.0.15 but its said that for ages (I'm pretty sure when it first said that version, it didn't exist.)

Is there a better way to find out than just trying tons of exploits to see which ones work?

These's a bunch of exploits in this forum, perhaps you can try some of them out and narrow it down (ie. "this exploit only works for version blahblah")

Thanks - I've been sort of trying that - I've tried some explots for various versions and not been able to get any of them to work on this particular site (The exploits I've tried I have gotten to work on other sites though.)

I was hoping there would be a less, er, agressive way of getting the version number than testing out tons of exploits, perhaps an error response or a change of some text somewhere...

Well ...

Code:
http://www.target.com/phpbb/

add

/docs/CHANGELOG.html

This is the only way to find out .... if i am wrong.
good luck

i think they explain howt...

mmm, version disclousure, since the .14 or .13 or whatever, there is no version identifier on the footer like previous versions, and the most used for know what version is the changelog and the info posted on his website, the is ever and a admin who says they upgrade to etc..

but this not completly true..
why...

because i have found phpBB 2.0.10 Forums, who is the more hackeable verison of phpBB forums on the internet and the bugs inclusive de newest XSS they dont work, because the site admin patched the forum and not upgrade the forum, so they we cannot expect that if you found the changelog.htm our post info and they say they have phpBB 2.0.15 maybe they patched his forum and now its an phpBB 2.0.16

so...
we have to tried all the exploits you have for searching an a unpatched bug....

see ya

Thanks, I was hoping there would be another way since the person who set up this board deleted the changelog.

They seem to have patched most vulnerabilities I have tested too.

I'll figure this one out one day Smile

Thanks again.

This is my first message in this forum, so I hope don't disturb... Embarassed

I've seen the replies in this topic and I have a doubt. I've been searching about the version of my target website about various methods, and I have 3.

One of them, is looking the footer of the forums, but it's not the really version...

Chronicles phpBB2 theme by Jakob Persson (http://www.eddingschronicles.com).
Powered by phpBB 2.0.10 ? 2001 phpBB Group
Todas las horas son GMT + 1 Hora
Stone textures by Patty Herford
Ported for PHP-Nuke by nukemods.com

Second of them, is, like PyroSama says, looking the admin, and it says this:

Powered by phpBB 2.0.10 ? 2001 phpBB Group

Chronicles phpBB2 theme by Jakob Persson (http://www.eddingschronicles.com). Stone textures by Patty Herford
phpBB2 Plus by phpBB2.de

And the last one, is looking the copyright of the forum...:

http://www.website.com/modules/Forums/copyright.php [Is a PHP-Nuke with phpBB Forum]

...and it says...:

Module Copyright ? Information
Forums module for PHP-Nuke

Module's Name: Forums
Module's Version: 2.10
Module's Description: phpBB 2.10 port for PHP-Nuke

License: GNU/GPL
Author's Name: chatserv
Author's Email: chatserv@nukeresources.com

Three diferent methods, and all of them says that is a 2.0.10 phpBB Forums... Is it the real version?? Confused

Thanks for your replies. Cheers! Wink

P.S: I think I'm not very well at English... Sorry about it, I'm Spanish... Embarassed

Most php-Nuke portals have the new forum patches on their boards, so the version number is still the old 2.0.10 but the boards are not vulnerable. Just try a 2.0.10 or higher exploit and see what happens. Wink
