However, I am a complete noob Embarassed and need help.
First of all : Do I have the necessary tables to do MD5 hashes?

If not, what do I need ? If so : What am I doing wrong ?
I tried to do a hash and just get the following error:

Hey iammojo,

The tables listed in the picture you posted are LM Tables not MD5. You will need to Buy,make, or find MD5 tables to crack MD5 hashes and make sure you have the correct Charter sets.

Embarassed whoopsy !

Could you be more specific regarding this please?
Also, how long would you expect the making of the tables to take on a 3ghz PC with 1gb of memory?
Thanks for your help Smile

Character Set meaning, What characters to use... lowercase, alpha numeric, uppercase, symbols... etc these are defined in the charset file. rtgen uses only these characters to limit the amount of generation time. If the password you're trying to crack has characters not found in the charset you chose then, it will not be found. You must also take into account the length of passwords you're targetting. In your post the maximum password length is 1 to 7 characters, It'll probably take about 2days to generate those tables.

iammojo,

I think your best bet to get to making tables would be to get a copy of winrtgen from www.oxid.it! Mao (the owner) have been making the best password recovery apps for years now that this is a application that added a GUI to making the tables and also lets you benchmark with you system how long it will take before starting the generation. Oxid.it is also the place to get Cain & Able witch works great with rainbow tables. Once you understand more you will want to make you own custom scripts for table generation but to start get winrtgen.

iammojo,

That would be an ok tables but with what you have there you will only have 1 table that has a 1.39% success rate you need to change the (N* of tables to more than 1) Just to warn you doing all charset will take a long time and lots of HD space I would recommend starting out with Alpha-numeric or lowerAlpha-Numeric. But so far you have a good start.

What does the number of tables relate to exactly?
I assumed that only one was needed per set, i.e one table containing all lower-numeric passes.
Obviously this isnt the case. Without understanding this issue I have no idea as to how many tables to have it make. Embarassed

iammojo,

This is a very simply way to look at it.

Chain Count= bigger tables size

Chain Lenght= long time to make tha table

Tables #= Number tables on your hard drive

Whiterat,

This all depends of the chain count and chain length. You should be able to hold a good supply of tables on a 100 gig of space you just need to play with the tables to learn the best formula that works for you. MD5 Tables will take up lots of space but if you keep you goal to 1-8 you should be OK.
