Im trying to connect to a MMORPG server, but i dont want my ip to be on their logs. I was wondering if i can accomplish this through a socks5 proxy.

also, even though i have been reading, what kind of program would i use to accomplish this? do i use telnet? or some other program. Some tips and hints would be nice, right now im going to work but ill be back on, ill be doing more reading and i was just hoping to get some extra info here too. Thanks =)

Ok, well first you need access to a machine with another IP address - for example a proxy server or a server of your own somwhere. From my experience, using SOCKS5 proxy's found on internet listings are usually slow, unreliable and very insecure. Be aware that the proxy operator can check their logs and see *all* of the data sent in plain text 9including your passwords and real IP) - if that is a risk you are willing to take then fine....

Also know that not all proxys make you fully anonymous, anonymity is only a side effect of a proxy - some proxies forward your real IP along with their IP to the server, so the MMORPG will know your real IP. Thats another risk you will have to take. It is also *very* possible for the MMORPG to get your real IP from your system by other means - to become totally anonymous is.... very difficult.

If you intend to run your own proxy, i reccomend a set of applications known as 3proxy - Its a free tiny proxy script that includes a SOCKS proxy. The only problem with this is that you require another computer to run it off with another IP address or there would be no point!

Lastly, Im guessing you know how to change proxy settings in Internet Explorer or Firefox.... If you dont its
Tools > Options > Advanced > Network > Settings > Manual Proxy Configuration In Firefox
Tools > Internet Options > Conenctions > LAN Settings > Use a proxy server for your LAN > Advanced In IE7

If your MMORPG is not browser based, then you may have a slightly more challenging time forcing the game client to connect via the proxy - I believe there are applications that you can use to force a program to connect via a proxy, but I cant think of any right now.

Any more questions?

I wasn't aware that Tor allowed for SOCKS proxying?

Edit: Seems it does - yet another blindingly obvious idea, nice thinking Bason :p

Ok, so ioflush - Tor does sound like the safest bet, and dosent involve rooting sombody's server Razz
