I heard that it was possible to have a rainbow table for all MD5 hashes (obviously conflicts after so many characters).
And the size of which is only about 6TB. Anyone heard this? |

And the size of which is only about 6TB. Anyone heard this? | Well think about it like this:
Code: | For a single character in an MD5 hash, there are 16 possibilities (1234567890abcdef) So 16^32 represents the number of possible hashes total. (Remember, there is an infinite amount of input MD5 can take, and only a finite (16^32) number of possible hashes)
A MD5 hash is 128 bits, or 16 bytes. It takes 1024bytes to make a kilobyte.
1024b / 16b = 64 hashes per kilobyte.
1024^4 bytes are in a terabyte, or 1024^3 kilobytes. Therefore you can fit (1024^3) * 64 hashes into a terabyte, which is approximately 68,718,476,736 hashes.
Now remember earlier how there are 16^32 combinations in MD5, right? Well, 16^9 = 68,718,476,736, so you'd need waaaaaay more than 6 Terabytes to hold every possible combination. |

Now ... that's a lot of hashes !
But if you have 6TB of hashes ... you can crack them right away ! |

i believe the best rainbow tables generated are loweralpha-numeric-space 1-8 and loweralpha 7-7 numeric 1-3.. i believe thats the most common used passwords :S.. u can get them from the links at freerainbowtables.com |
