so our forum (vbull 3.5) was hacked by some idiot who thinks he's some kind of rendition of Kevin Mitnick.well, he did no serious damage but he did aim me to brag and he threatened to start a ddos attack on our forum. i can't say i'm too concerned but should i be? i mean, it takes brains to do one, it's too easy to track, and i heard it can lead to 10 years in prison. and if it is a threat, is there anything we can do to prevent it?

second, we have some of his IP addresses, is there any way to find out if he used a masked proxy or if it's his real one?

thanks in advanced.

Kevin Mitnick? I highly doubt he is related. Anyway, any old scrip kiddie can pull together a botnet these days, in fact I even wrote my own self restructuring and maintaining one that worked much like P2P applications... and this was years ago... in VB!!! And even if the 'hacker' does not even have that ability, then there are numerous toolkits avalible online.

I suggest that you just do a little management upstream of your server (get advice from your server's ISP) to take the load off your servers. Also, a google search would pull up if an IP is a proxy or not. My bet is he used a generic public proxy list. Once you narrow it down, do an abuse@<insert ISP name here> email which are ALWAYS taken seriously and dealt with.

Apart from that, a little formal threatening over AIM may do the trick. If you have his AIM address, maybe you could do a bit of research... social networking sites are brilliant for gathering information.

Anyway, good luck with your hacker Smile
