There is one closed "invite only" section on the forum. I would like to login as one of the users (regular forum posters) in that group. Is that possible? Or is it easier to hack admin and give myself those privileges?

Mosts phpbb are very secure now, so not much chance unless admin has not upgraded in ages.

Your best bet is to find other sites the users are registered at and hopefully they are less secure. Or to find "sister" sites on the same webserver and hack those and get into the phpbb site that way.

Would you believe that I have found a 2.0.8 phpbb running on a website belonging to a big player in the IT security market! I'm not allowed to name them, but an unusual fish starting with 'B' is a clue.

It is possible that the admin manually patches the security holes without updating everything.
