An IDS does what the name implies -- detect intruders. These systems perform real-time packet analysis to find certain attack patterns or signatures. Everyone from home users to Fortune 500 companies can benefit from Snort.
Snort has the advanced customization features hard-core security administrators require. While any newbie can run Snort, there's some manual configuring you have to do to get it running. Snort is dumb and doesn't know where any of the config files are. You have to tell the system where they are. You can get help figuring this out by using Snort's official documentation and setup guides.
